NAAMAN A LIVING EPISTLE OF JESUS CHRIST (2 KINGS 5) God did not put you on earth to serve yourself. God put you on earth to serve others. God expects us to die ourself and serve others. It is not easy because the flesh die hard. In fact the flesh don't want to die. Aram is a country north east o f Israel which would later called Syria. Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Aram, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Aram: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper. The Lord was with Naaman in the battlefield and Naaman was continous victorious in battlefield. And his man would follow him because Naaman was v ictorious in battle. That's why the king hold Naaman in such high regard. Naaman had everything that this world could give, but he did not have good health . Naaman was a leper. Leporsy would someday alienate him from his prople and the army. He would be force away from his family. There are no cure for leprosy. People are afraid of lepers as much as they fear the disease. Lepers are destined to be lonely and isolation. 2 And the Arians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife. 3 And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy. 4 And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel. And the Arians had gone out of companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel, a little maid. And she waited on Naaman's wife. She had a servant's heart. She did not become bitter. She was not resentful of her situation. She was not bitter. She was not angry. She had been taken away from her family. She had been forcibly removed from her home. She had been taken out of Israel. How did she react to the suffering , and humiliation. How did she react to her heartache.. How did she react to her humiliation. She serve the best to her ability . She knew that hatre was wrong. She knew that bitterness was wrong. She knew bitterness and hatred was wrong against God . Instead she show to love. When calamity came upon the little girl, how did she react ? She did not pout and stamped her feet . She did not complain. She did not lashed out at the people that caused her trouble. She chose her Lord who bought her. She was a good servant no matter of the situation. She had the desire to serve. She had the desire to forgive. She was a good servant. She won Namaan's wife's heart. And she said unto her mistress, Would God of my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria. for he would recover him of his leporsy. And Namaan thus said told his his lord, saying , Thus and thus the maid that is of the land of Israel. She was a good servant no matter what the situation. She had to desire to serve. She had the desire to forgive. The little girl was concern about Naaman's illness. Naaman's despair increased as his desire for a cure. The little girl truly wanted to help Naaman. The young servant girl made known her desire to help. She wished that Naaman could be with the prophet Elisha. The little girl loved Naaman and wanted Naaman to be healed. One day the little girl let her desire be known. If Naaman be with the prophet who was in Samaria, the prophet could heal Naaman. The little girl longed for Naaman to be healed because she loved him. Naaman took the little girl's word seriously. The little girl have faith that there was hope for his leprosy to be healed. The prophet Elisha could heal him Naaman wasted no time and Naaman let known his hope to be heal by Elisha. He repeated the little girl's message. A cure for leprosy was possible. Naaman took the little girl's word seriously. There was hope for his leprosy to be healed. The prophet Elisha could heal Naaman. Naaman wasted no time and Naaman let known his hope to be healed by Elisha. He repeated the little girl's message. A cure for leprosy was possible. The king was excited for Naaman, 7 And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man does send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeks a quarrel against me. Naaman and his army arrived in Israel where they were granted an audience with the king . The king of Israel was shock when he read the letter that he had been handed caried by Naaman. The king could not believed what he had read. There was no cure for leprosy. Only God could cure leprosy. And the king was not God. The king was thrill that it was possible for Naaman to be healed . So the king wrote a letter to the king of Israel. He requested that Naaman was to be healed. The king of Aea, was willing to pay for Naaman's healing. Money was no problem. He was prepared to spend plent of money to heal naaman. The king of Aram sent Naaman silver, shekon of gold. and changes of clothes. The king effort to help Naaman shown the value of the king placed upon Naaman Naaman was worth alot to the king. The king was willing to pay whatever it cost to get Naaman healed. How much are you worth to the Lord? Are you worth a trillion dollars? Are you worth more of less.. You are worth everything to the Lord. Jesus died for you. This shows how much you are worth in the Lord"s eyes. Your value goes beyond money. The amount that Naaman is worth to the king of Aram is insignificant compare to what we are worth to the Lord.. He purchase life with his precious blood. The material things in this worth is insignificant. What is significant is your life to the Lord. It happened that God directed situations. Nothing is by chance. It happened because God directed situations so that Elisha heard that the king of Israel torn his clothes because of stress. It happened because God directed situations so that Elisha heard that the king of Israel torn his clothes because of stress. And it happened when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes because of stress. Elisha sent words to the king of Israel, " why have you torn your clothes. Now let him come to me and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel." It happened that God directed situations. Nothing is by chance with God. 8 And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore have you rent your clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel. 9 So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha. Naaman was not impressed . No Elisha. No prophet came out to greet him. Naaman expected what? Naaman and his men were waiting outside of Elisha's house, They were waiting for Elisha to come out and heal Naaman, Naaman's expectation was high. He could barely contain that excitement. What would Elisha do ? What would Elisha say ? Would ELISHA put on an a flashy show? Naaman was filled with excitement. Elisha never came out of his house. Instead of Elisha the prophet coming to greet him a servant showed up. A servant with a message to go wash seven times in the Jordan Eiver. How disappointing. Naaman's expectation was crushed. His pride was deeply hurted Naaman came expecting so much. He seem to receive so little. How dare Elisha treated him this way. Naaman was a warroir. Naaman was a respected general.Naaman was a mighty warrior. How dare Elisha sent a servant out to tell him to wash seven times in the Jordan River. They have better river back at home.. Naaman felt that he deserved better treatment than that. 10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall come again to you, and you shall be clean. So Naaman came with his horses and his chariots, and stood at the doorway of the house of Elisha. Naaman was not impressed. No Elisha. No prophet come out to greet him. Naaman was expecting what ? Naaman and his men were waiting outside of Elisha's house. They were waiting for Elisha tp come out and heal Naaman. Naaman's expectation was high. He could barely contain his excitement. What would Elisha do ? What would Elisha say ? Would Elisha put on a flashy show ? Naaman was full of excitement. But Elisha never ceme outside of his house. Instead of Elisha the prophet coming to greet him a severant showed up. A servant with a message to go wash seven times in the Jordan River. How disappointing . Naaman's expectation was crushed. His pride was deeply hurt. Naaman came expecting so much. He seemed to receive so little. How dare Elisha treated him this way. Naaman was a great warrior.Naaman was mighty warrior. How dare Elisha send a servant out to tell him to wash seven times in the Jordan River. They have better rivers at home. Naaman felt that he deserved better treatment than that. Naaman was furious. And he went away and said, 11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage. Naaman felt defeated. That was something Naaman wasn't used to feeling. Naaman was a mighty warrior. Everywhere Naaman went , he was victorious. Why should he wash in the muddy water of the Jordan River seven times. Naaman could wash in rivers back home. Naaman felt the whole trip to Israel was a complete waste of time.. Was Naaman mad at God because God did not answer his prayer in the way that he desired God to answer his prayer. Was God sending Naaman back home empty handed. Maybe God wanted to answer prayer in His own way. This was not the way that Naaman desired God to anser his prayer. This is frustrating. Naaman was a proud man. His pride was hurt because Elisha's simple instructions to wash seven times in the Jordan River. Elisha knew that Naaman was a proud man. Pride brings destruction to man. Elisha wanted Naaman to get rid of his foolish pride. Elisha wanted Naaman to know that before the Lord , all men must be humble. Before Naaman could be healed of his leprosy ,he had to get rid of his foolish pride. A cure would not be given to him ,unless Naaman come in a humble spirit before the Lord. Man's wisdom thinks it can supply better methods of cleansing ; but man's method will not work because man's method always lead to failure. It sound foolish to those people who are perishing when they hear that Christ died to save them. The message about Christ's death on the cross is nonsense and foolish to those who are lost. But unto us who are saved, Christ is the power of God. God will destroy all human plans of salvation no matter how clever they may seem to be. Where are the scholars ? Where are the brilliant debaters of the world's great affairs? God has shown their cleverness and human wisdom to be useless nonsense. God has shown that this world's wisdom is foolishness and nonsense because human wisdom leads to death. The truth is that the wisdom of the Lord leads to life. God in His wisdom made it impossible for people to know and find Him by means of their human brilliance and cleverness. It please God to save those folks who put their trust in the Lord Jesus as their Saviour. (1 Cor 1:18-31) The way for healing of leprosy of sin is very simple. Believe the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. Believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.(Acts 16:31) 13 And his servants came near, and spoke unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid you do some great thing, would you not have done it? how much rather then, when he said to you, Wash, and be clean? Naaman ,you have to clarify the situation Why should you cleanse yourself in the Jordan River? .There are better rivers at home. But the rivers at home may not cleanse the leprosy. The situation comes to what God ordained. Do you believed in God? Or you don't believe in God ? Naaman had tried all his life to get a cure for the leprosy . But he had met with failure. It sound ridiculous. to cleanse seven times in the Jordan River and he would be cleansed. Naaman was in a desperate situation. There was no harm in trying. Naaman was a man of his word. There was no wishy washy in his thinking. Once he made up his mind he would not change his mind. After the first dip into the Jordan River, Naaman was still not cleansed. Everyone was watching him. Was he acting like a fool ? Naaman urged himself to be patient in the Lord. Don't be rash. Be patient. Keep calm. Let God work out His plan. Naaman was disappointed that no visible improvement in his skin. But kept his calm.He didn't wish to show his urgency. Naaman persist in his faith in the Lord to cure him. Naaman wished to give God a chance to prove Himself. A cure for leprosy is not a man's doing. It is the work of God to give a cure for leprosy. With excitement Naaman took his second dip into the Jordan River to be met with disappointment. No change in his skin . He was still a leper. The disappointment was eating him.But Naaman persist in his faith the Lord to cure him. Maaman believed that the Lord would cure him. He submerge himself into the Jordan River.the third time. The Lord has His way of doing things. The Lord has His own timing. It is not man's timing. It was not time yet to cure Naaman. Naaman suffered from leptosy much of his life. Naaman would be patient with the Lord. Naaman waited patiently for the Lord. Naaman hoped that his fourth try to cleanse himself in the Jordan River would be successful. When Naaman came out of the water the fourth time, nothing has changed. His leprosy did not changed. Naaman's hope was crushed, but he did not give up. Naaman persust in his hope in the Lord to cure him. Naaman believed that the Lord would cure him of leptrosy.. Once Naaman commited himself to cleanse himself seven time in the Jordan River, Naaman would do it. Naaman gave time to the Lord to do His miracle. The Lord wished Naaman to cleanse himself seven times in the Jordan River, then Naaman would cleansed himself seven times in the Jordan R|iver. Naaman hoped that his fifth attempt to cleanse himself would be met with success. Usually Naaman the mighty warrior would defeated his enemy in battle after the first try. It was hughly unlikely that Naaman needed to have the second and third try to defeat his enemy. After Naaman got out of the Jordan River the fifth time, Naaman met with disappointment again. Naaman was disappointed but he was patient in his hope of the Lord to cure him. Naaman gave time to the Lord to work out His miracle. For the sixth time Naaman went into the Jordan River, hoping anxiously to be cure by the Lord. Throughout his life Naaman was met with success. He always defeated his enemies. This battle is different. This enemy leprosy was more powerful than man's strength Naaman realized that man was unable to defeat leprosy. The cure for leprosy was the work of God. Naaman realized that if he was cure of leprosy. it was the work of God. After the sixth time in the Jordan River, Naaman was still the same. Nothing has changed. Baaman was still a leper. The disappointment was overwhelming but Naaman kept his patient in his hope in the Lord to cure his leprosy. This was the seven time Naaman would go into the Jordan River. God has to prove Himself. If He was God, Naaman would be cure of his leprosy.. Naaman was waiting anxiously for the miracle of God to happen. 14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. Humbleness before the Lord reveal Naaman's faith in the Lord. There is a change in all his mind, all his heart, all his soul, and all his strength. Naaman now loves the Lord with all his mind , all his heart, all his soul , and all his strength. The Lord Jesus Christ died at the cross to saved the sinners who believe in Him. The Lord Jesus had stopped the leprosy of sin that was eating out Naaman's heart. In meekness and humility Naaman washed himself seven times in the Jordan before the Lord. Doctors and man of God can not heal any one. It is the Lord who gives healing. 15 And he returned to the man of God he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, please, take a blessing of your servant. 16 But he said, As the LORD lives, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused. The sevenfold dipping in the Jordan symbolizes the perfect washing in the cleansing blood of Christ. In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and uncleanness. "(Zechariah 13:1) Naaman ,the sinner accepted God's self-humbling way of salvation by grace . And Naaman was saved. Naaman's concerns were regarding his worship , his testimony , and the appearance of evil. Naaman has to return to his old environment. Naaman understood that he would have to return to live in the midst of idolry and evil. Naaman knew that he could no longer worship the false idols. Naaman had made up his mind to worship only the Lord. Naaman wanted a place to worship.Naaman wanted a means for worship , so Naaman asked tor permission to take two loads of soil back home. Naaman could erect an altar to the Lord for a memorial In his own land. He could could sacrifices to the Lord as an evidence of his determination to forsake all the idols. Naaman knew he would have to go back into his old environment. Naaman knew he had to return to the world and face the evil of that day. Naaman knew he had to have the armour of God for true worship of the true God if Naaman was to be an effective witness. 17 And Naaman said, Shall there not then, please, be given to your servant two mules' burden of earth? for your servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the LORD. 18 In this thing the LORD pardon your servant, that when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon your servant in this thing. 19 And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way. Naaman was happy with Elisha's response. Elisha gave his assurance that God’s understand’s Naaman's concerns. God understands Naaman’s heart. Elisha's only response was, Go in peace . This implies Elisha's assurance that God understands. The issue was his attitude and heart. Perhaps this illustrates the principle of separation versus isolation. Believers are to infiltrate or penetrate the world for the Lord. As the Lord put it. We are to be in the world, but not of it (John 17:15-17). We are in the world , but we are not of the world. The mercy of the Lord touched Naaman more than the miracle cure. Naaman had experienced the loving-kindness of the Lord. The Lord knows the sufferings of man who had been wasting away and eating away by the sin of leprosy. Naaman knew that the Lord loves and cares for man. Naaman also showed himself to be grateful to Elisha. Love can not be bought with worldly wealth. Elisha helped Naaman because Elisha loved him as his neighbour. Elisha understood the commandment of the Lord to love your neighbour as yourself. Thus Elisha wanted to show his new convert Naaman that he had helped him because he loved him as his neighbour. 20 But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master has spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD lives, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him. 21 So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well? 22 And he said, All is well. My master has sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray you, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments. Because of his greed, Gehazi even lied. The decay of sin had been working a long time in Gehazi's heart. He had abused his position as the prophet's servant, for his personal gains. Many people called themselves Christians , but they are not. The Lord knows them not, because they do not obey the Lord. Wickedness are in their mind, heart, soul and strength. 23 And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him. 24 And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed. 25 But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence come you, Gehazi? And he said, Your servant went no whither. 26 And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with you, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet you? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and olive-yards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants? 27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto you, and unto your seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow
