Jonah

The book of Jonah describes the adventures of Jonah,
a prophet , who tried to disobey the commandments of the
Lord. The Lord told Jonah to go to Nineveh, the capital
of the Assyrian empire. Niveveh was a threat to Jonah's
nation of Israel. The people of Nineveh were wicked .
And they were enemies of the people of Israel.
Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh with God's message
because he wanted the city to be destroyed. Jonah did
not want to warn the people of Nineveh of their danger.
When the folks of Nineveh repented , and the Lord spared
Nineveh for a time , Jonah was angry and said,
O Lord , was not this my saying , when I was yet in
my country? Wherefore I fled before unto Tarshish; for I
knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful , slow to
anger , and of great kindness , and a God who relents from
sending calamity (Jonah 4:2)

Jonah knew that the Lord is God of love, who is
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness. Yet Jonah
was a disobedient servant , because he failed to love his
neighbor as he loved himself. God's commandments for the
chosen people are to love God and to love their neighbors
as they love themselves.
The book of Jonah rebukes the failure of those
people who should represent God.
God's love and mercy are not directed exclusively to the
chosen people. God is the Creator of the entire human race.
God love Man. For God so loved the world that He gave His
only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not
perish but have everlasting life.
Jonah represents some of the people who made the
mistake in thinking that the Lord is theirs only.
Some of the people made the mistake to think that
because God has chosen them He care only for them. Some of
the people hold the wrong idea that God is
hostile to people outside the covenant.
People of the Lord should not have contempt for others .
People of God should not have hatre to surrounding nations.
God's attitude towards the pagans, and the
surrounding nations is revealed as we see the Lord
dealing with Jonah.
Jonah was proud, arrogant, and selfish. He was puffed up in
pride. Jonah was angry because God had pity and mercy on
the folks of Nineveh. And God tried to make Jonah see His
love for Man. He said to Jonah,
You have had pity on the gourd, for which you have not
laboured, neither made it grow; which came by night,
perished in a night. And should I not have pity on Nineveh
that great city; wherein are more than a hundred and twenty
thousand persons that cannot discern between their right
hand and left hand; and also much cattle.

The wicked folks are evil. Wicked deeds can not defeat wicked.
Love defeats wicked. This is God's message to Jonah.
Love defeats evil. This is God's message to God's chosen
people. Love defeats evil. This is God's love message
to us. The Lord is God of mercy, and God of pity.
Should I not have pity on Ninevah ?
Because the Lord had pity on Nineveh , He commanded Jonah
to go and warn the people of Nineveh. Because the Lord had
mercy on Nineveh .He was patient in His dealing with the
rebellious Jonah.Out of that attitude of pity ,the Lord
loves the sinner but God hates sin. God's standard of
Holiness is not lowered when God has pity on the folks of
Nineveh.
The people of Nineveh were very wicked. They had tortured
and slaughtered their enemies. And the children of Israel
were their enemies. Jonah did not want to help his enemies
who had tortured and killed his fellow folks.
Jonah was sent to Nineveh to warn the people of the judgment
of God against their sins. When the people of Nineveh
repented , God repented. When the folks of Nineveh turned
from their evil to God, He spared them. Nineveh fulfilled
its responsibility by obeying the Lord. And the Lord
forgave the folks of Nineveh.
Jonah was angry because he considered Nineveh to be
enemies of the Jews. Jonah wanted God to destroy Nineveh;
but God spared Nineveh.
The Lord appealed to Jonah to fellowship of love. He
wanted Jonah to love his neighbours and enemies. Love
your enemies. Bless them that curse you. Do good to them
that hate you. And pray for them which despite fully use
you , and persecute you.
The Book ends with a picture of Jonah still angry and still
in rebellion.
But if Jonah wrote the Book , then the Lord has won His
victory and brought Jonah into sympathy with Himself. The
story that Jonah told reveals Jonah's failure and folly ,
and Jonah's understanding why he had failed .
Everything of significant value in the Book of Jonah is
emphasized in the Lord Jesus Christ. The pity of God for
Nineveh is the same the Christ Jesus has for Jerusalem
when He wept for her. It is the pity and sympathy that
he has for Jerusalem and all the cities of the world.
think of the corrupted and evil cities. But God has
compassion and pity on all of them. There are billions
and billions of souls in these awful cities.
Jonah had pity for the gourd. This plant grew up in one
night and perished in the next night. Jonah didn't make
it grow. Yet Jonah felt sorry for the withered plant.
How much more , then, should God have pity on Nineveh
and those awful cities. After all they have so many
folks who can't discern between right and wrong.
God is love.
We must love God with all our heart, with all our soul,
with all our mind , and with all our strength. And we
must love our neighbor as ourselves.
God's love is not aim at only a chosen few. God's love
is not exclusive to a few folks. God loves all His
creation.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten
Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but
have everlasting life.

Jonah Did not Obey the Lord

(JONAH 1:1-17)

Now the the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of
Amittai, saying,
Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against
it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence
of the Lord, and went down to Joppa. And he found a ship
going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare thereof, and went
down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the
presence of the Lord.
There is no indication of how the Lord spoke to Jonah. The
important fact is that the Lord did spoke to Jonah.
Why did the Lord call Jonah into His service ?
God loves Man . God loves the sinners but hates sin.
Jonah was sent to Nineveh to warn the people of the Lord's
judgment against their sins.
Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh with God's message
because he wanted the city of Nineveh to be destroyed. The
people of Nineveh were enemies of the people of Israel. and
Jonah did not want to warn them of their danger.
But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there
was a great mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship
was like to be broken. The storm was so violent that the
ship was in danger if breaking up.
Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh because he was
convinced that the Lord would not carry out His threat to
destroy the city. Jonah knew the Lord was gentle, slow to
anger, and of great kindness. He knew the Lord was full of
mercy and love. He knew that Lord would rather forgive and
save even the enemies of His people than destroy them.
Sin brings storms and tempests that threaten the soul, the
family, the neighbors, the churches, and the nations.
Then the mariners were afraid. They cried out every man
unto his god, and cast forth wares that were in the ship
into the sea, to lighten it of them. The sailors were
terrified and cried out for help. Then , in order to lessen
the danger, they threw the cargo overboard.
But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship, And he
lay , fast asleep. Jonah was sleeping in sin.
The ship master came to Jonah . What do you mean sleeper ?
Arise. Call upon your God, if so be that God will think
upon us, that we perish not.
And they said every one to his fellow,
Come. Let us cast lots, that we may know for whose
cause this evil is upon us.

So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
The Lord has many ways of exposing the hidden sins and
sinners.
They wanted to know who was responsible for making all
this trouble for them.
They came Jonah . Now , tell us. Who is the blame for
this ? What is your occupation ? What are you doing here ?
What is your country ? And of what people are you ?
And he said to them,
I am Hebrew. And I fear the Lord, the God of heaven,
who has made the sea and the dry land

Then the men knew that he fled from the presence of the
Lord, because he had told them.
If you fear the Lord who made the sea and the dry land,
why were you such a fool as you could flee from His
presence. You can not hide from the Lord.
Then the sailors said to him,
What shall we do unto you that the sea may be calm
unto us ?

The storm was getting worse all the time. The sea wrought,
and was tempestuous.
When sin raised a storm , and stirred up God's displeasure,
we must consider what to be done about the sin. Jonah saw
himself as a sinner. He acknowledged his sin. He saw this
was to be his punishment of his iniquity. Jonah accepted
it. And Jonah justified God in His action against him.
Jonah had frankly confessed his sin before the sailors. He
confessed that he was a worshiper of the Lord and that he
had disobeyed Him.
Then the sailors were afraid because they feared that the
wrath of the Lord would fall on them.
The sailors were perplexed as to what to do. They had on
board of their ship a man whom the Lord was angry. The ship
was far from the land where they could put him ashore.
Because they didn't want to die, they risked their lives
for him. They rowed their oars hard in a desperate effort
to reach the shore in the violent storm.
Jonah was responsible for making all this trouble for them.
Jonah finally saw what great danger he had brought up the
sailors by his disobedience. Jonah saw this to be the
punishment of his iniquity. Jonah accepted it , and did
not wish the sailors to suffer because of his sin.
When a storm is stirred up, nothing will calm and stop it
but parting with the sin that caused the storm.
Parting with their material possessions will not pacify
the raging storm. The Jonah must be thrown overboard.
The sailors were not cruel men. They didn't want to be
blame for taking innocent blood.
They said,
Lay not upon us innocent blood
They didn't want to be responsible for killing a man.
Jonah knew he was the cause of this storm. He decided that
he alone should suffer for his sins. And he told the
sailors to throw him overboard.
And he said to them,
Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so the sea
be calm unto you; for I know that for my sake this great
tempest is upon you.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land;
but they could not. The sea wrought and was tempestuous
against them.
The sailors tried to get the ship to shore , rowing with
all their might. But the storm was getting worse and worse,
and they got nowhere.
Therefore they cried unto the Lord, and said,
We beseech you , O Lord, we beseech you, let us not
perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent
blood; for you O Lord , have done as it pleased you

So they took up Jonah , and cast him forth into the sea.
And the sea ceased from her raging.
Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a
sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows.

JONAH'S PRAYER AND DELIVERANCE

(JONAH 2:1-10)
Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah.
And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three
nights. The Lord commands all creatures. The Lord can make
any creature to serve His purpose.
For with God nothing shall be impossible.(Luke 1:37)
The Lord had punished Jonah, but the Lord had not forgotten
about Jonah. The Lord saved a drowning man who was trying
to run away from Him, and who had offended Him.
It was God's mercy that Jonah was saved. To be swallowed by
a great fish may not seem to Jonah an act of God's mercy
and kindness. But the Lord used the great fish to save
Jonah's life.
At the command of the Lord, a great fish swallowed Jonah.
And he was inside the fish for three days and three
nights.
From the deep inside of the gigantic fish Jonah prayed
to the Lord his God.
Jonah had not prayed while the storm was raging.
But now Jonah felt the desperateness of his situation.
Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's
belly, and said,
I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord,
and he heard me.Out of the belly of hell cried I, and you
heard my voice.

Jonah knew to whom to pray. When he was in trouble , Jonah
prayed. Being kept alive by a miracle, Jonah prayed. Jonah
knew only the Lord could have caused the great fish to
swallow him up.
Jonah had always known that the Lord was the true God.
Jonah always knew God's great concern for man, yet he
disobeyed the Lord and tried to run away from Him. Jonah's
problem was that he was trying to please men, the people of
Israel. The Lord sees a bigger picture. God is the Creator
and loves His creation, even the pagans. God loves the
sinners, but hates sin.
Now that he was in trouble , Jonah realized and understood
the value of God's love. And he came back to the Lord.
Now Jonah was truly penitent .Jonah was truly sorry for
his sin. And Jonah prayed earnestly for the Lord to save
him. And the Lord heard him.
God hears man and delivers man.
For you had cast me into the deep, in the midst of the
seas; and the floods compassed me about. all your billows
and your waves passed over me. Then I said, I am cast out
of your sight. Yet I will look again toward your holy
temple.

Jonah saw the justice of God's punishment upon him.
Yet Jonah saw more than the justice of the Lord. Jonah
also saw God's love. And he asked hopefully for God's
mercy.
Yet Jonah looked again toward God in His holy temple for
mercy .The waters compassed me about, even to the soul.
The depth closed me round about , the weeds were trapped
about my head.
The water came over me and choked me. I went down to the
bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was
about me for ever. Yet have you brought up my life from
corruption , O Lord my God.
When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord .
And my prayer came in unto you, into your holy temple.
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
But I will sacrifice unto you with the voice of
thanksgiving. I will pay that I have vowed.
Salvation is of the Lord.
Jonah could see the only way out of his trouble was through
God.
The Lord is the way.
Jesus said,
I am the way,the truth, and the life. No man comes
unto the Father but by me.(John 14:6)
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten
Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but
have everlasting life.

JONAH OBEYED THE LORD

The word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time,
saying,
Arise , go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach
unto it the preaching that I bid you.

so Jonah arose , and went unto Nineveh, according to the
word of the Lord.
Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days
journey.
The second command of the Lord to Jonah was the same as
the first one. Jonah had now surrendered to the Lord. Now
he was ready for His service.
Jonah had repented . He changed his mind and his way.
Jonah had returned to his work and duty.
See the benefit of affliction.
It brought Jonah back to his place where he had deserted
it.
God gave Jonah a second chance. God was very patient with
Jonah. His grace and mercy drew Jonah to Him.
So Jonah obeyed the Lord and went to Nineveh , a city so
large that it took three days to walk through it.
And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and
he cried, and said,
Yet forty days , and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
Jonah started to preach God's message at the beginning
of his visit to Nineveh.
God's servants must go where He sends them.God's servants
must say what He tells them to say. God's servants must do
whatever the word of the Lord commands.
Jonah faithfully and boldly went to Nineveh and delivered
God's message to the sinful people.
So the people of Nineveh believed the Lord, and proclaimed
a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even
to the least of them.
For the word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose
from his throne, and he laid his robe from him. And the
king covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
And the king caused it to be proclaimed and published
through Nineveh by the king and his nobles, saying,
Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste
anything.
Let them not feed, nor drink water. But let man and beas
t be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God.
Yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from
the violence of their hands. Who will tell if God will turn
and repent, and turn away from His fierce anger, that we
perish not ?

So they the people believed the Lord. And they proclaimed
a fast.
And all the people , from the greatest to the least , put
on sackcloth to show that they had repented.
The king also joined the fast by making it official. The
king wore sackcloth along with the others. And hey began to
plead for mercy.
Sack cloth and ashes was regarded as a symbol of humility
and dependence to God.
Forty days is but a little time for an unrighteous people
to repent in. Sometimes it takes a long time for sinner to
repent. Just look around you at the sinners. See how hard
it is for them to repent.
The people of Nineveh followed the examples of their king.
The king humbled himself before the Lord.
They confessed their sins. They prayed . They turned from
their sins. It became a mean of escaping wrath and
obtaining
mercy form God.
The beasts' moans and groans for food and drink reminded
their owners to cry to God for mercy.
What must we do to be saved ?
Acknowledge your sin.
First see yourself as a sinner. Sin is tragic, vile.
Sin degrades and destroys.
The soul that sins shall die.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is
eternal life.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
and are justified freely by His grace through the
redemption that came by Christ Jesus.(Romans 3:23)
You must cry out like the publican.
God be merciful to me a sinner.
You must repent.
You must be truly sorry for your sin.
Repent you therefore, and be converted, that your sins
may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall
come from the presence of the Lord.(Acts 3:19)
Like the prodigal son, see the awfulness of sin, and
then repent of sin.
Godly sorrow works repentance.
Jesus said,
Except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.
(Luke 13:3)
You must confess your sins, not to men, preachers,
ministers, or priests, but to God, and to those people
you have wronged.
With the mouth confession is made unto salvation,
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves,
and the truth is mot in us. If we confess our sins, He is
faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse
us from all unrighteousness.(1 John 1:8-9)

David said,
I confessed my sin. And the Lord heard, and forgave
the iniquity of my soul.

You must forsake sin.
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man
his thoughts. And let him return unto the Lord, and He will
have mercy upon him; and to our God , for He will
abundantly pardon.(Isaiah 55:7)

Sorrow and tears are not enough. You must be truly sorry
enough about the sin to want to get rid of the sin once
and all.
Your sorrow must be sincere. And you must truly wanted
to repent from sin.God declares that the sinner must
make full restitution.(Exodus 22:3)
One must restore whatever one has taken (Luke 19:8-9).
You must believe in the finished work of Christ on the cross.
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be
saved.(Acts 16:31)

You must accept Christ . Christ must be received personally
into your heart, if the new birth is to be yours.
But as many as received Him, to them He gave power to
become the sons of God, even to them that believe His name.
(John 1:12)
The folks of Ninevah did not think of God as fickle. They
believed that the Lord's greatest desire was not to destroy
people but to save them.
When God repents , it does not mean that He was sorry for
sin. God does not sin. When God repents, it points to God's
decision to change His method of dealing with Man.
Repenting from sin by man is pleasing to God.
God wants man to be righteous.
God's promises of salvation take precedence over His threat.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten
Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but
have everlasting life.
God's expressions of wrath serve to quicken people to
repentance.
The standard of God's righteousness was not lowered, when
God spared Nineveh. Only His way of dealing with the folks
of Nineveh was changed.
This was an expression of the grace, mercy, and love of the
Lord.
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil
way. And God repented of the evil , that He had said that
He would do unto them. And he did not destroy them.
The Lord saw what they did. He saw that they had given up
their wicked ways. so the Lord changed.
Evil does not defeat evil. Darkness remains dark.
Wicked people remains wicked in the dark.

Light shines the dark world.
Light shines in the dark so that the wicked folks can see the brightness of the truth.
Light removes the darkness of the world.
The truth is that the Lord God loves man.
Truth defeats lies.
Love defeats evil.

JONAH'S ANGER AND GOD'S MERCY

(Jonah 4:1-10)
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly , and he was angry.
Jonah was unhappy because the Lord didn't destroy
Nineveh.And Jonah was very angry.
Jonah prayed to the Lord,
O Lord , was this not my saying, When I was yet in
my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarnish; for
I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow
to anger, and of great kindness, and when sinners turn
to you and meet your conditions you cancel the punishment
against them.
Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech you, my life from
me ; for it is better for me to die than to live.

Jonah wanted death . Jonah's mind was full of folly,
passion, and strong corruption.
Jonah had a proud , uncharitable, and unforgiving spirit.
Jonah didn't care about the welfare of the folks of
Nineveh. Jonah had come only to declare and witness the
destruction of Niveveh and her people.
Jonah did not have in his heart the love of God.If he
had the love of God he would not be angry when God spared
the people of Ninevah.
Jesus said,
Love your enemies. Bless them that curse you. Do good
to them that hate you. And pray for them which
dispitefully use you, and persecute you;
That you may be the children of your Father who is in
heaven; for He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on
the good, and send rain on the just and the unjust.

(Matthew 5:44-45)
Jonah was not ignorant of the character of his God, the
Lord. Jonah tried to run away from Nineveh not because
he was afraid of the folks of Nineveh. He tried to run
away because he did not want the folks of Nineveh to be
saved.
Jonah knew that every threat of the Lord was conditional.
Jonah knew that the greatest desire of the Lord was not
to destroy men but to save them.
The people of Nineveh were pagans . They were enemies of
the people of Israel, Jonah's people.
Jonah did not want to forgive the wicked people of Ninevah.
God wants Jonah to grow up into a spiritual matured
believer who knows God's heart.
God wants Jonah to see the truth.
Evil does not defeat evil. Love defeats hatre.
 Love defeats evil. Jesus said,
A new command I give you.
Love one another . As I have loved you , so you must love
one another. All men will know that you are my disciples if
you have love to another.(John 13:34-35)

We know that we have passed from death unto life,
because we love the brethren. He who loves not his
abides in death.(1 John 3:14)

Owe no man any thing, but love each other for he who loves
another has fulfilled the law.
For this , you shall not commit adultery, you shall not
kill, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness,
you shall not covet; and if there be any other commandment,
it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely,
you shall love your neighbour as yourself.
Who is your neighbour?
God created all human beings.
Every human being is your neighbour.
Love works no ill to his neighbour. Therefore love is the
fulfilling of the law (Romans 13:8-10)
And above all things have fervent love among yourselves ,
because love shall cover multitude of sins(1 Peter 4:8)
Love is expressed in action.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten
Son that whosoever believes in Him should not peish but
have everlasting life.
God is love. (1 John 4:8)
Little chilren , let us not love with word only, but in
deed and in truth. (1 John 3:18)
The commandment that Jesus gave to His disciples is that
they must love one another.
It is an old commandment in a new light.
You must love your neighbour as yourself.
(Lev 19:20 : Mark 12:29-31)
In the Old Testament , the men and women of God were
examples and models of the type of persons that God would
approve.
Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Sarah,Jacob, Daniel, Samuel, Moses ,
David, and the prophets of God were showing the people how
to love God, and how to love their neighbour as themselves.
But they were not the perfect models and examples. They come
short of the glory of God.
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
(Romans 3:23)
Christ Jesus is the only perfect man who has never sinned.
The Word was God. And the Word became flesh in he Person of
Christ Jesus. Jesus is the light of the world. Jesus is the true way to
love. We follow Him. In the brightness of Jesus we can see
how to love. We must love one another as our Lord has loved
us.
Our strong love for each other will prove to the world that
we are disciples of Christ.
Such love is a testimony to the world . Love glorifies God
because God is love.
Such love points and shows people to Christ. Such love
frees you from fear, anger, lust, greed, selfishness, and
sorrow.
Unsaved people will recognize the blessings of such love.
And they will be drawn unto Christ , when we with love lift
up Christ as our Lord.
Such love comes from the Lord because the Lord Jesus Christ
shines brightly in the darkness of the world.
Such love comes from the Lord because Christ frees the
destitutes by giving them hope and love.
Such love wins people to the Lord Jesus Christ because they
know that such love comes from God.
God has shown His love for us in that while we were sinners,
Christ doed for us. It is a love lavished upon us witout
thought of whether we are worthy to receive it or not.
Love is a gift of God.
We are saved by the grace of God through our faith in our
Lord Jesus Christ. You are saved through God's loving
kindness through your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
It is not the result of your efforts .Your salvation
is not the results of your works. It is a gift from God, so
don't boast about your efforts.
Faith works by love. (Galatians 5:6)
Man's very best comes far short of God's lowest and least
requirements. No man can justify himself before God.
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
(Romans 3:23)
And the wages of sin is death.
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but
according to His mercy He saved us.(Titus 3:5)
Man can not save himself. Only God can save man. Man can
not save himself by his own efforts. This very important
lesson have still not been learned by many people.
They still seeking by their own works and their own
efforts to save themselves. They still trying to make
themselves righteous in the sight of God.
All our righteousness are filthy rags.(Isaiah 64:6)
Not only our bad habits and bad deeds are offensive to
God. But even what we consider our good human deeds and
thoughts offend God as well. They are but filthy rags
because by comparison with God's character they fall so
far short.
When man broke God's law, the justice of God demands full
payment of the penalty of death from man.
The wages of sin is death.(Romans 6:23)
But God loves man.
How can God justly forgive man and bring man back into
fellowship with Himself ?
How can God express His love, His righteousness, and His
justice toward man all at the same time and still require
the justly deserved debt of sin to be paid ?
How can God remain just and yet declare sinners forgiven
and righteous ?
The only solution is for God to become man.
Since it was Adam, the first man, who had sinned and fell
into the penalty of death, another man would have to be a
permanent substitute for the first man. It would have to be
someone of God's choosing. Then he could qualify to be a
permanent substitute.
This man would have to bear the punishment of God against
all sin that would ever be committed.
But in order for a person to qualify to in man's place of
judgment and be his sin-bearer, these things would be true
of him. This person would have to be truly and properly
man. This person must never have sinned. And this man is
Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is truly and properly man. And the Lord Jesus

Christ is truly God.
The Lord Jesus Christ has by his suffering and death made
an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will
believe in him may be saved.
For what says the Scriptures ? Abraham believed God, and
it was counted for righteousness.(Romans 4:3)
The folks of Nineveh never heard of the name of the Lord,
but still responded to this prophet's God. And they were
saved from destruction.
The folks of Nineveh had faith in God. Their faith was the
same type of faith Abram had for the Lord. And thus a
parallel response by the Lord, counting it to them ,as
righteousness.
Gentiles , who do not have the law, do by nature things
required by the law. For when the Gentiles , who have
not the law, so by nature the things contained in the
law, these , having not the law, are a law unto themselves;
which show the work of the law written in their hearts,
their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts
the mean while accusing of excusing one another.
(Romans 2:14-15)
For there is no respect of person with God. For as many
as have sinned without the law shall also perish without
the law; and many as have sinned in the law shall be judged
by the law;
For not the hearers of the law ae just before God, but
the doers of the law shall be justified(Romans 2:11-13)
The folks of Nineveh believed God , and proclaimed a fast,
and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the
least of them.(Jonah 3:6)
All Nineveh , from the greatest to the least
 begun their acts of repentance.
Their repentance was sincere .They fasted. They were
humble before God by wearing sackcloth. They
prayed to God for mercy. And they made vows to
give up their evil ways. And God saw their works,
that they turned from their wicked ways. and
God evoked His sentence of punishment that
He had said that He would do to them.He did not
do it because He was comforted and eased
concerning them. Then the Lord said to Jonah,
What right have you to be angry ?
The Lord was questioning Jonah about his ungodly attitude.
Did not His servant know His love and concern for all
human beings ?
So Jonah went out of the city , and sat on the east side of
the city. And he made himself a booth and sat under it in
the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
And the Lord prepared a guard, and made it to come up over
Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver
him from his grief. so Jonah was exceeding glad of the
guard.
A gourd is a plant. The Lord prepared the plant to come up
over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to
deliver himof his grief. The speed of the plant's growth
was an act of God.It was a miracle of God.
Th great fish that saved Jonah was a miracle of God. And
just as the great fish saved Jonah, the fast growing plant
saved Jonah from his discomfort.
The Lord saved Jonah from his evil situation of being
overheated, but he was not yet saved from his attitute
of unforgiving.
God dealt with Jonah the way Jonah would have deal with the
pagan nations. Because God saved Jonah from the evil of
discomfort, Jonah was exceedingly glad.
Jonah gladly accepted the forgiveness of the Lord for
Israel and himself. But Jonah did not want this forgiveness
to extend to the Gentiles and Nineveh.
When God saved Nineveh from the evil of destruction, Jonah
was angry.
The Lord had provided the vine as an instrument of
salvation. God had saved Jonah. But God prepared a worm
when the morning came the next day. And it smoke the guord
so that it withered.
At God's command , a worm attacked the plant, and it died.
Jonah was not without God's provision for salvation.
The blessing of the plant's shade was an act of God.
The worm destroying the plant was an act of God.
The destruction of the plant was also an act of God.
And it come to pass , when the sun did arise , that God
prepared a vehement east wind. And the sun beated upon the
head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to
die. Jonah said,
It is better for me to die than to live.
The Lord took away Jonah's earthly comfort, the cool shade.
The east wind brought with it the searing hot temperature.
When Jonah could not endure the heat, he cried out for his
life to be taken.
The first time Jonah wished for death because he was angry.
(Jonah 4:3)
This second time Jonah cried out to God because he could
not bear the heat any longer.Jonah was now in physical
distress. Jonah's words,
It is better for me to die than to live. Those words were of Elijah (1 Kings 19:4)
Both prophets felt that they were defeated.
Elijah felt that he had won a victory against the false
prophets. But then he became afraid of Jezebel, when the
Lord took away His miracle power from Elijah. And Elijah
ran away to save his life. He ran because of his lack of
faith in the Lord.
As long as Elijah looked to the Lord for his strength, he
was strong. But when he looked at Jezebel's threat, Elijah
lost his faith and became afraid.
Elijah was a man of like passion with ourselves.
He had the same weakness where we are weak.
 He was capable of failing
where we could fail.
Elijah , the man who could bring fire down from heaven, was
as human as we are.
When the Lord took away Elijah's miracle powers, Elijah
requested for himself that his life be taken away.
And he said,
It is enough; now O Lord , take my life, for I am not
better than my ancestors.(1 Kings 19:4)

The Lord had left Elijah to himself. without the
miracle powerof the Lord, would Elijah still have faith
in the Lord ? The Lord wanted to humble Elijah. The Lord
wanted Elijah to trust in Him, and not on the powers of
the miracles. Elijah learned that he was not any better
than the common folks.
Now Jonah would face almost the same situation. The Lord
had left Jonah to himself.
Jonah wanted God to follow him. Jonah wanted his prophecy
to come true. Jonah had only hatre for the people of
Nineveh and wanted the destruction of Nineveh.
Jonah was full of pride. He had elevated himself as a great
prophet. If his prophesy did not come true, there was a
possibility that his own people might stone him. False
prophets were stoned. Jonah felt God was responsible
for his predictament.
Jonah did not want to follow the Lord. Jonah was
self-centered. He thought only of himself. Jonah wanted
to be a great prophet.
Man's plan for salvation always fail. Man's plan of salvation
is based on the devil's lies.
God's plan for man's salvation is rested on the solid foundation
of truth of God.
Jonah wanted to die when he saw that his mission of
announcing judgment on Nineveh had failed.
The Lord had shown to Jonah that Jonah was not any
better than common folks. The Lord made Jonah see that
Jonah was not any better than the folks of Nineveh.
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of
God.

For by grace you are saved through faith ; and that not of
yourselves. It is the gift of God; not of works, lest any
man should boast .(Ephesians 2:8-9)
The Lord wanted Jonah to trust Him, and not on the powers
of miracles. And the Lord wants us to trust in Him, and not
on the power of miracles. The Lord had performed many great
miracles in Jonah's life. The Lord had caused great
miracles in Jonah's life .The Lord had caused a great storm
to rise up. The Lord had commanded the great fish to
swallow Jonah and to vomit Jonah upon the dry land.
As with Elijah , Jonah learned to trust in the Lord and not
in the miracle powers.
And , behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong
wind rent the mountains and brake in pieces the rocks
before the Lord . But the Lord was not in the wind. And
after the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was
not in the earthquake.
And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord
was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was a
still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it.
(1 Kings 19)
Like Elijah , we may have done many great works. But we
should not be proud. We have to be humble before the Lord
because it is the Lord who has done these great works for
Lord.
Let the prophet not bost of his great powers. Let the
prophet see that all his miracle powers comes from the
Lord.
The Lord works the miracles. The Lord knows what He designs
us for, even though we do not know ourselves. The Lord knows
what services He wants us to do. The Lord knows what trials
are before us. Fear not . The Lord grace of God is sufficient
After Elijah had failed , the Lord gave Elijah another
chance.
The Lord gave Jonah many opportunities to return to Him.
The Lord is giving you another opportunity to return to Him.
The Lord is giving you another opportunity to return
 to your appointed duty.
Go , Return.
Go. Return to your post that the Lord has appointed you.
The thought of the Lord is not as man's thoughts. The Lord
knows all the storms of disappointments and broken hopes
that are torturing the noble spirit of His servants. The
Lord does not love you less than when you stood so bravely
against wickedness.
The Lord still loved Jonah, even though Jonah had failed.
The Lord still loved Jonah , even though Jonah did not know
God's heart.
But God's love healed and restored His servant's soul to
health and joy.
Don't be discourage , if you have failed. You may have
failed , as Elijah and Jonah had failed, where everyone
expected you to stand. You may feel ashamed and wanted
to hide. You feel forsaken by everyone. Man may forsake
you , but the Lord has not forsaken you.
The Lord loves you and wants to restore you to health and
joy.
The Lord brought Jonah into sympathy with Himself. Jonah
saw God's light. Should I not have pity on Nineveh ?
The Lord loves man. Because God loved the human beings,
He had pity and compassion for the folks of Nineveh.
everything the Lord has done is the outcome of His love.
And the Lord made Jonah see His love for human beings.
He said to Jonah, You have pity on the gourd, for which
you have not
laboured , neither made it grow ; which came up in the
night,
and perished in the night, And should not I have pity on
Nineveh that great city; wherein are more than a hundred
and twenty thousand persons that cannot discern between
their right hand and left hand and also much cattle ?

The Lord is God of mercy and love.
Should I not spare Nineveh ?
Out of that attitude of pity and mercy and love, all the
activities of the Lord proceed. God loves the sinner, but
God hates sin. God's standard of holiness is not lowered
when God has pity on the folks of Nineveh.
The Lord appealed to Jonah to fellowship of love. The
Lord wanted Jonah to love his neighbour and enemies. Love
your enemies, bless them that curse you. do good to them
that hate you. And pray for them that despitefully use you,
and
persecute you.
Your strong love for your enemies will defeat them. And they
will no longer be your enemies. Your love turns them into
your friends.
The Book of Jonah ends with a picture of Jonah still in
rebellion. But if Jonah had wrote the book, then the
Lord has won His victory and brought Jonah into sympathy
with Himself. The story that Jonah told reveals Jonah's
failure and folly, and Jonah's understanding why he had failed.
Everything of significant value in the book of Jonah is
is emphasized in the Lord Jesus Christ. The sympathy of
God had for Nineveh is the same compassion that the Lord
had for Jerusalem when he wept for her. It is the same
sympathy and pity He has for Jerusalem and all the cities
of the world.
Think of the corrupted and evil cities of the world.
But God has pity on all of them. There are billions and
billions of souls in these awful cities.
Jonah had pity on the gourd. This plant grew up in one
night and perished the next. Jonah didn't do anything
to make it grow. Yet Jonah felt sorry for the withered
plant. How much more, then, should God have pity on
Nineveh and those other awful cities. After all  they have
so many folks who can't discern
between right and wrong.
The servants of Christ must come into that fellowship
of compassion, pity, and love.
Love is sympathetic towards others.
How can we love if we have not compassion towards other.
God is love.
We must love God with all our heart, with all our soul,
with all our mind, and with all our strength.
And we must love our neighbour as ourselves.
God's love is not aim at only a chosen few. God's love
is not exclusive. God loves all His creation.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only
begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should
not perish but have everlasting life.
