THE SECOND EPISTLE OF PAUL TO TIMOTHY
The Second Epistle to Timothy was written by
Paul the apostle. Paul wrote this epistle to his
spiritual son Timothy. If there were two imprisonments
of Paul, this epistle was written about A.D.67.
This letter consists largely of Paul's personnel
advice to to Timothy, a younger worker and helper
to Paul.
Paul gives Timothy advice on endurance. Timothy
is also advised and encouraged to keep on
witnessing faithfully to Jesus Christ. Paul urges
him to hold to the true teaching of the Good News
of grace. Paul encourages Timothy to do his duty as
teacher and evangelist.
Timothy is warned not to get involved in foolish
and ignorant arguments that do no good. These
arguments ruin people who listen to them.
Timothy is reminded of the example of Paul's own
life.
But you have followed my teaching , my conduct,
and my purpose in life ; you have observed my faith,
my patience, my love, my endurance, my persecution,
and my sufferings.
The teaching of the first letter to Timothy teaches
that the function of the church is to proclaim the
truth in the world, and that the function of the
servant of God is to explain the truth. The teaching
of the first letter to Timothy is assumed in the
second epistle to Timothy.
The reason for writing this letter to Timothy was the
dangers threatening the church. These perils could
prevent the church from fulfilling its function
as the pillar and solid ground of the truth.
These dangers are pointed out by the following word.
2Tim 3:1-5 This know also, that in the last days
perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves,
covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient
to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false
accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those
that are good,
Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures
more than lovers of God;
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power
thereof: from such turn away.
The church are being invaded by godlessness and
worldliness. If the church fails, hen the truth ceases
to be proclaimed by the church to the world.
And certain parts of the abide in darkness.
The purpose of this letter to Timothy was to prepare
Timothy for the fulfilment as a servant of the
Lord.
This letter gives a perfect picture of a sevant of
Jesus Christ. The equipment of the servant is
revealed in two words, gift and grace
A gift os God's desposit. A gift is the first step.
Beyond this there is grace. Grace is the infinite
resource of God at our desposal through Christ.
Grace creates the tone of the believer's service
and the blessing in our living. Grace brings all
into harmony with the character of God.
The goals of the servant of Christ is construction
and character. His goal is to develop in holiness
of those whom he ministers. he builds upon the
foundation of Christ Jesus. He watches the building.
He watches careful how a young believer is developing
spiritually. He patiently corrects the building where
it is faulty. He carefully checks the building with
the word of God to make sure that the young believer
is maturing soiritually.
The Word of God helps in character building.
Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable
for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction.
A person can depend upon the scripture that is
inspired of God. A person can build upon the Word of God.
The Word of God is profitable for teaching. Instruction
means construction that carries a building higher.
reproof does not mean rebuke. Reproof is to correct
something that is out of line and make it straight.
The duty of the pastor is the building of character
according to the will of God.
At the same time he must guard his own character, so that
his character my express the truth that he preaches.
the servant of God must know the scriptures. He must also
preach and teach the Word of God. Therefore he must
abide in the scriptures. His business is to preach the
Word. He is not to destroy it. And he is not to defend it.
His business is to preach the Word of God.
Paul tells Timothy to to fulfill your ministry.
Paul reminds him that he has responsibilities concerning
the spiritual gifts.
Stir up the gift of God which is in you.
The gifts of God is a thing of fire. Stir up the fire.
Fan the flame. Do not allow it to burn to an ember.
Do not get into the dnger of allowing the fire to die down.
When the word of God ceases to move a person , the gift,
whether of apostle, prophet, evangelist, or pastor,
will become dull and ded.
The believer's second responsiblity as to the equipment
concerns grace
Be strengthened in grace that is in Christ Jesus.
he must pray. He must study the Word of God. the servant must
fellowship with God. If he neglects to do these things, the
fire will always burn dimly and will be in danger of going
out>
If we are to construct the character in others, we must
build ourselves carefully according to the will of God.
We have to give diligencein our duties.
2Tim 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts:
but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace,
with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2Tim 2:23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid,
knowing that they do gender strifes.
2Tim 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not
strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach,
patient,
2Tim 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose
themselves; if God peradventure will give them
repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
Fulfill your ministry.
The Lord is able to take of the deposit of Truth
which He commits to us. There is no need to waste
our time guarding the truth and defending it.
The Lord is able to take care of it.
Our duty is to preach the truth.
Our duty is to hold the Word of God as trustee. It is
ours for others.
WE are in debt to others for all we know of the truth.
SALUTATION
2Tim 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will
of God, according to the promise of life which is
in Christ Jesus,
Paul's apostleship is from Christ Jesus. His apostleship
is through the will of God. And Paul's apostleship is in
accordance with God's promise of life in Christ Jesus.
2Tim 1:2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son:
Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and
Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul shows his deep love for this child of faith, when he
calls Timothy his dearly beloved son.
Timothy is not his physical son. Timothy is Paul's
spiritual son. Timothy is his
own son after the common faith
The Lord is our source of grace , mercy, and peace.
THANKSGIVING
2Tim 1:3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers
with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have
remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
Paul's forefather have been intensely loyal to the faith.
At least two previous generations of faithful beleivers
from paul's family have served the Lord.
Paul is not following fables. The faith of his forefathers
have produced fruits. Paul also mentions two generations
of believers in Timothy's case. Eunice, Timothy's mother
and Lois , Timothy's grandmother have been faithful
believers. This is ground for encouragement. Paul is
convincedthat the faith that is first in Timothy's mother
and grandmother can be found in Timothy also. This faith is
real, with no hypocrisy.
This faith is with pure conscience<
The faith is to hold in an obedient conscience. It is not
defiled by disobedience.
Paul's constant prayer on Timothy's behalf reveal Paul's
interest in Timothy.
Paul's love fro Timothy is displayed by Paul's earnest
desire to see his beloved son, who would fill himwith joy.
Paul writes to Timothy,
2Tim 1:4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of
thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
Paul thanks God. Paul is thankful for the unfeigned faith
in Timothy and his mother and grandmother. Paul unceasingly
remembers Timothy's tears so that he is filled with joy>
Timothy's tears are tears of loyalty and love to his
spiritual father, Paul, and to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Timothy's geniune faith have been expressed in tears.
Timothy's love and faith are the cause for Paul's joy.
2Tim 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith
that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois,
and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in
thee also.
2Tim 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that
stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the
putting on of my hands.
In the light of Timothy's background and faith, Timothy
is to stir up the gift of God that is in him. This gift of
God has been bestowed upon Timothy through the laying
of the apostle's hands (1 Tim 4:14)
Stir up means to fan into a flame.
Stir up means to kindle up a fire. Timothy is to stir up
or cultivate his powers in the Lord.
Timothy is encouraged to use the gift that is given to
him by God.
2Tim 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear;
but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
The gift of God is the Holy Spirit . The believers
are led by the holy Spirit of God. The believers have the
Spirit of adoption. Their state of mind belongs to
adoption. God has adopted the believers. The believer's
outcome is the ability to pray and address to God the
Father. The believers belong to the family of God.
The unblievers have the spirit of bondage.Their state of
mind belong to slavery. Their outcome is fear (Rom 8:15).
God's gift is of the power of God. The gift of God
is the dynamic work of the Holy Spirit.
Sound mind refers to a peaceful mind that is resting
on the solid foundation of Christ. A person with a sound
mind has fearless courage to stand for truth and
righteousness.
2Tim 1:8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony
of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou
partaker of the afflictions of the gospel
according to the power of God;
A person with a sound mind is not ashamed of the truth
and has the courage to stand for righteousness.
The testimony of the Lord is the Good News of Jesus
Christ. Jesus said,
I am the way , the truth, and the life.
We are not to be ashamed of the true testimony of
Christ Jesus. we are not to be ashamed of a righteous
person.
Paul was the prisoner of the Lord.
Take your part in suffering for the Good News, as
God gives you the strength for it and
be partaker of the afflictions of the
gospel according to the power of God.
2Tim 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with
an holy calling, not according to our works,
but according to his own purpose and grace,
which was given us in Christ Jesus before
the world began,
God saved us and called us to be His own people,
not because of what we have have done. he saved us
and called us because of His own purpose and grace.
which was given to us in Christ Jesus before the
world began
2Tim 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing
of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished
death, and hath brought life and immortality to
light through the gospel:
God gave us this grace by means of Jesus Christ
before the beginning of time, but now it has
been revealed to us through the coming of our
Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus has ended the power
of death. And through the Good News, Jesus has
revealed immortal life.
FACING HARDSHIP
2Tim 1:11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher,
and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
Paul is an example of a person who has been
appointed by God as a herald, an apostle, a preacher,
and an instructor of the gospel.
2Tim 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these
things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know
whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is
able to keep that which I have committed unto
him against that day.
Because of the Lord's commission, paul suffers these
things.
These things are imprisonment and bonds. When
we serve the Lord, we are not ahame to suffer and
endure any abuse and unfair treatments.
We know whom we have believed. We believe in the
the Lord Jesus Christ. We are persuaded that
the Lord is able to keep that which we have committed
unto Him against that day.
it is not our job to defend the gospel. The job
belongs to the Lord. Our business is to preach
and teach the Good news of Jesus Christ. the gospel
that the Lord has entrusted to us is protected by
the Lord. for this cause we are not ashame to suffer
the afflictions of the gospel. We believe in the
Lord Jesus Christ. We are persuaded that He is
able to keep all that we have committed unto
Him against that day.
2Tim 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words,
which thou hast heard of me, in faith and
love which is in Christ Jesus.
Paul urges Timothy to hold fast the form of sound
words. In Christ are faith and love to insure
our keeping the faith.
2Tim 1:14 That good thing which was committed
unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth
in us.
The Good News is committed unto us by the Holy
Spirit, Who dwells in us.
2Tim 1:15 This thou knowest, that all they which
are in Asia be turned away from me;
of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.
2Tim 1:16 The Lord give mercy unto the house
of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me,
and was not ashamed of my chain:
2Tim 1:17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought
me out very diligently, and found me.
2Tim 1:18 The Lord grant unto him that he may
find mercy of the Lord in that day:
and in how many things he ministered unto me
at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
The people in Asia turned away from Paul when he
was in prison. They were ashamed of him.
The Lord gives mercy to Onesiphorus, who was not
ashamed of Paul's chain.
In many things he ministered unto Paul .
2Tim 2:1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in
the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
Strength is required to proclaim the Good News of
of grace. You must strengthen yourself in the grace
that is in Jesus Christ.Salvation is the result
the finished work of Christ.
2Tim 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of
me among many witnesses, the same commit thou
to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others
also.
The truth of grace was divinely revealed to Paul.
And Paul committed the truth of grace to Timothy
in the presence of many witnesses. It was the
duty of Timothy to commit the truth to other
faithful people who would , in like manner,
instruct others.
2Tim 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness,
as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
Preaching the truth of grace arouse conflict.
An adherent to the truth of grace may expect
opposition. As a good soldier of Christ Jesus,
you therefore must endure the hadness of
conflict and opposition.
2Tim 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself
with the affairs of this life;
that he may please him who hath chosen him to
be a soldier.
Separation from the affairs of the world is necessary
to do God's work. No Christian soldier shall entangles
or implicates himself with the business with the
business and affairs of this life.
The purpose is that the faithful soldier might be
pleasing to the Lord who enlists troop. The believer's
singular aim is to please his Lord ( 2 Cor 5:9).
He must not get entangle in worldly pleasures and
pursuits.
2Tim 2:5 And if a man also strive for masteries,
yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
Reward for achievement in the Christian race demands
separation from sin ( Heb 12:1).
reard for achievement also demand discipline and
obedience to God's Word. We must run according to
the rules of the contest. The athlete must run
according to the rules of the contest.(1 Cor 9:25-27)
2Tim 2:6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first
partaker of the fruits.
The farmer must labor hard first before sharing the
fruits of his toil.
2Tim 2:7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give
thee understanding in all things.
Paul has aith in God's gospel of grace.
2Tim 2:8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed
of David was raised from the dead according
to my gospel:
Paul's faith in the Lord led him to suffer hardship
even to the extend of imprisonment (Eph 6:20).
Paul's was in chains ; but the Word of God was
not bound.
2Tim 2:9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer,
even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.
The Word of freedom which Paul had preached would
effect salvation inmany people.
2Tim 2:10 Therefore I endure all things for the
elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation
which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
Believers are the elect (Eph 1:4-6).
Paul endured suffering so that the beleivers may be
saved and eventually be glorified (Rom 8:29).
2Tim 2:11 It is a faithful saying:
For if we be dead with him, we shall also
live with him:
This reliable fact that the Holy Spirit has placed
the believer into a position with Christ.
If we be dead with Him, we shall also be alive with
our Lord.
Because Christ jesus has died for us, we are justified
and forgiven. Our ultimate goal is eternal life,
2Tim 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him:
if we deny him, he also will deny us:
If we deny Him. He will reject us. The Lord will count
the unfaithful people as disqualified for a prize.
The unfaithful people are disapproved for reward in
the Christian race (1 Cor 9:27).
Suffer means endure.
Reign suggests living with the Lord Jesus Christ.
2Tim 2:13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful:
he cannot deny himself.
The Lord can not deny Himself. His word is true.
the believers are promised safety and security in
Christ (Jn 10:28-29 ; Rom 8:1)
A FIRM FOUNDATION
2Tim 2:14 Of these things put them in remembrance,
charging them before the Lord that they strive not
about words to no profit, but to the
subverting of the hearers.
Warn the people against the vain and silly debates
that result in destroying the hearers.
2Tim 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God,
a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth.
Study the words of God. Be diligent in your study
so that you will be qualified and approved before God.
The good worker needs not be ashamed of his own work.
Only the bad worker is embarrassed by faulty
workmanship . The diligent worker rightly use the
word of God. The good worker diligently labors to
discern the Word of God and to apply the word of
truth .
2Tim 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings:
for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
2Tim 2:17 And their word will eat as doth a canker:
of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
2Tim 2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred,
saying that the resurrection is past already;
and overthrow the faith of some.
Avoid empty chatter . These useless babblings and
profane chatter has no value whatsoever.
Some people left the faith and do not hold the
truth. Their false words are like ulcers.
They have left the way of truth. And they
are upsetting the faith of some believers by
claiming that our resuurection has already
taken place.
2Tim 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God
standeth sure, having this seal,
The Lord knoweth them that are his.
And, Let every one that nameth the name
of Christ depart from iniquity.
The solid foundation that God has laid can not
be shaken. the Lord knows those who are His.
Let everyone who claims to belong to the Lord
turn away from wrong doing>
2Tim 2:20 But in a great house there are not
only vessels of gold and of silver,
but also of wood and of earth;
and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
2Tim 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself
from these, he shall be a vessel
unto honour, sanctified, and meet for
the master's use, and prepared
unto every good work.
These are dishes and bowls of all kinds;
some are for special ocasions. Others
are ordinary use. If anyone makes himself
clean from all these evil things, he will be used
for special purposes. Because he is dedicated
to the Lord, he will be used useful to his
Master, ready to be used for every good deed.
2Tim 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts:
but follow righteousness, faith, charity,
peace, with them that call on the Lord out
of a pure heart.
2Tim 2:23 But foolish and unlearned questions
avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.
Keep away fom foolish and ignorant arguments.
You know they end up in quarrels.
2Tim 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must
not strive; but be gentle unto all
men, apt to teach, patient,
The Lord's servant must not quarrel . He is
kind toward all people. And the servant of
the Lord is gentle and patient as he corrects
his opponents, for it may be that God will
give them the opportunity to repent and come
to know the truth.
2Tim 2:25 In meekness instructing those that
oppose themselves; if God peradventure will
give them repentance to the acknowledging of the
truth;
And when they come to know the truth, then they
will come to their senses and escape the traps of
the devil.
2Tim 2:26 And that they may recover themselves
out of the snare of the devil, who are taken
captive by him at his will.
2Tim 3:1 This know also, that in the last days
perilous times shall come.
Give special attention to these things. The Last
days is often referred to the messianic period.
The believers are living the days. In these
last days many people will depart from the
truth.
The difficult times are made so by the people
involved.
2Tim 3:2-5 For men shall be lovers of their own
selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers,
disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Without natural affection, trucebreakers,
false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of
those that are good,
Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of
pleasures more than lovers of God;
Having a form of godliness, but denying
the power thereof: from such turn away.
The believer must turn away from such people. From
such turn away. There must be a rigid separation.
2Tim 3:6 For of this sort are they which creep
into houses, and lead captive silly women laden
with sins, led away with divers lusts,
2Tim 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come
to the knowledge of the truth.
They enter homes and seduce weak and silly women,
who laden with sins. And they are led away with
various lusts. These false believers are ever
learning but never come to any knowledge of the
truth.
2Tim 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood
men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning
the faith.
The false beleivers are unable to arrive at the
knowledge of the truth. They also resist and
stand against the truth in stout opposition, as
Jannes and Jambres ( Ex 7:11-12 ). These men have
corrupt minds. They suppress the truth. They
have perverted their thinking. They are reprobate
concerning the faith (Roman 1:18 ; Jude 3).
2Tim 3:9 But they shall proceed no further:
for their folly shall be manifest unto all men,
as theirs also was.
Their wickedness shall proceed no further.
Their judgment and doom are shall be revealed to all
men. Their unbelief await divine judgment.
STEADFASTNESS
2Tim 3:10-11 But thou hast fully known my doctrine,
manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering,
charity, patience, persecutions, afflictions,
which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium,
at Lystra; what persecutions I endured:
but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
Paul's life and ministry are an example. because he
has faith in the lord, Paul is able to patiently
endure afflictions and persecutions. Persecutions
strike Paul in Antioch (Acts 13:45-50) ; Iconium
(Acts 14:56) and Lystera (Acts 14:19).
Paul uses himself as an example of the Lord's ability
to deliver him. In his patient endurance through
the persecutions, Paul has seen the Lord's delivering
hand. The Lord always delivers him.
2Tim 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in
Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
2Tim 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax
worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
All who live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer
opposition and persecution.
evil people and imposters shall grow worse and worse,
deceiving and being deceived.
2Tim 3:14 But continue thou in the things which
thou hast learned and hast been assured of,
knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
2Tim 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known
the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee
wise unto salvation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus.
In sharp contrast to the deceit of the world, Timothy
is to continue in the sound doctrine. The believer is
to rely on the Lord. To continue in sound doctrine is
knowing of whom one has learned. The scriptures
is the highest proof of the the truth of the doctrines.
Timothy has a life time of acquaintance with the
scriptures to teach wisdom to him.
2Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
The scriptures is given by inspiration of God. Its origin
is from God. Inspiration of God is God breathed.
All scripture comes with full divine authority and with the
truth and is profitable for doctrine.
God's word is useful for reproof.
The scripture is the Holy Spirit's instrument in conviction.
The scriptures are profitable for correction, for
instruction in righteousness.
Correction conveys the idea of improvement. The scriptures is
helpful for instructing a believer in righteousness :
2Tim 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect,
throughly furnished unto all good works.
PROCLAIM THE GOOD NEWS
2Tim 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God,
and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the
quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
Paul enforce the command with the divine witnesses,
God the Father and Christ Jesus the Judge of all.
2Tim 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season,
out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all
longsuffering and doctrine.
The important thing is to preach the word of God.Make
use of every opportunity to preach the Word. Tell everyone
of God's plan that center in Christ for the lost .
Always preach the word of God, in season and out of season.2Tim 4:3 For the time will come when they will
not endure sound doctrine; but after their own
lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers,
having itching ears;
2Tim 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears
from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
False teachings will not endure sound doctrines.
These false teachers turn from the truth.
And they turn to myths. They have an abundance of false
teachers.Their hope and conducts are built on sand ,
on myths and fables.
2Tim 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure
afflictions, do the work of an evangelist,
make full proof of thy ministry.
Be sober and watch . Be alert. Endure hardship patiently.
Suffer trouble. Do the work of an evangelist. The
function of the evangelist is to announce the
good news that Jesus died to save sinners.
Make full proof of your ministry. Serve God in full
measure. Serve the Lord faithfully.
2Tim 4:6 For I am now ready to be offered,
and the time of my departure is at hand.
2Tim 4:7 I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course, I have kept
the faith:
The hour has come for Paul to be sacrificed ;
the time is here for him to leave this life.
He has done his best in the race. He has run
the full distance, and he has kept the faith.
And now there is waiting for him the victory
prize of being put right with God.
2Tim 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me
a crown of righteousness, which the Lord,
the righteous judge, shall give me at that day:
and not to me only, but unto all them also
that love his appearing.
The crown of righteousness is a reward for faithfulness.
The Lord , the righteous judge, shall give the
crown to the faithful believers who love
His appearing.
2Tim 4:9 Do thy diligence to come shortly
unto me:
2Tim 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved
this present world, and is departed unto
Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto
Dalmatia.
2Tim 4:11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and
bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me
for the ministry.
2Tim 4:12 And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus.
2Tim 4:13 The cloke that I left at Troas with
Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee,
and the books, but especially the parchments.
2Tim 4:14 Alexander the coppersmith did me
much evil: the Lord reward him according to
his works:
2Tim 4:15 Of whom be thou ware also;
for he hath greatly withstood our words.
Alexander showed evil toward Paul. Alexander's
opposition to the gospel revealed his evil heart.
Paul had no expression of hatre toward Alexander.
Paul let the Lord deal with the opposition
against him.
Paul knew that his godly duty is to preach the
Good News. God's duty is to deal with the enemies
and the oppositions>
The Lord reards the evil-doer according to his
evil works.
Timothy is warned to beware of Alexander the
coppersmith because he had openly rejected the
Good News of Jesus Christ.
2Tim 4:16 At my first answer no man stood
with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that
it may not be laid to their charge.
At his prliminary hearing before Caesar all the
people had abandoned Paul. No one vouched for Paul
and his statements. Paul was disappointed but he
was vengeful. He prayed that their charges against
him would not held again him.
2Tim 4:17 Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me,
and strengthened me; that by me the preaching
might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles
might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth
of the lion.
The Lord stood with Paul and strengthen him.
Paul could depend on God's faithfulness.
